How to Share Internet Connection from Phone

by Techie

Lets say your computer connects to the internet through a phone or device. You want to share this internet connection.

To share it wirelessly through an ad-hoc

Go to view the wireless networks. If in XP, click change the order of preferred networks. Click add. A new dialog will open, set a name and password (if you want) and check the box at the bottom to make it an ad-hoc network. If you use Vista or Windows 7, go to the Networking and Sharing center, click Manage Wireless Networks on the left side, click add, and select ad-hoc.

Once your ad-hoc network is made you need to share your internet through it. If in XP go to start, point to connect to, and click view all. If in Vista or Windows 7 go to Networking and Sharing Center and click change adapter settings on the left side.

Right click the LAN connection you get internet from, go to properties, click the sharing tab. On Windows 7 you can just click to enable Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). On XP and vista you should specify which adapter to share it through – select your wireless adapter.

To share it through a router

If in XP go to start, point to connect to, and click view all. If in Vista or Windows 7 go to Networking and Sharing Center and click change adapter settings on the left side.

Right click the LAN connection you get internet from, go to properties, click the sharing tab. On Windows 7 you can just click to enable Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). On XP and vista you should specify which adapter to share it through – select your Ethernet adapter. Plug an ethernet cable from the ethernet adapter on your computer to the modem port on your router. You’re done.
