6 Reasons to Track Website Visitors

Why do we, as webmasters, analyze our website traffic? Why is it important to choose great analytic software instead of a simple web counter? It’s all about improving your website (that’s something every webmaster should care about). These are 6 reasons to analyze your website visitors.

Improve Your Visitor’s Experience – Analyzing your visitor traffic can help you improve the visitor experience. For example, if you noticed a very high bounce rate from some page, you would check that page to see why people are leaving after landing on that page. If you see lots of visitors landing on a page  through a Google search, you could make sure that that page answers their question.

Ensure Theme Compatibility – This goes along with improving your visitor’s experience. Analyzing your website traffic can help you check that your website is displaying normally in the most popular browsers.

Find Repeat Visitors – You can see how many visitors are repeat visitors and what they keep coming back for. This information is nice to have if you’re interested in launching a  community interaction part of your site (like a forum).

Find Broken Links – Website analytic software can let you know if visitors are landing on broken (404) pages.  If you have broken links it’s in your best interest to fix them for search engines and for visitors.

See Where Your Visitors Are Coming From- It’s important to see where your visitors are coming from. Was your link posted on a web forum? Are people coming to your site through Bing but not through Yahoo? This information can help you increase traffic. It’s also good to see if your advertising is working effectively.

Track Goal Conversion – This is probably the most important reason to track visitors to your website. You need to know how many people are purchasing your product or service and what your highest-converting pages are. This will help you increase sales and make your website more effective.

I recommend Piwik. It’s great and I prefer it over Google Analytics.

Thanks for the recommend on Piwik.

I love the fact that it is real-time (GA is, sort of, but you have to 'force' it to show you today's data, and when it does it's not always complete). Another huge plus is that it is customizable, something I am suprised Google in its infinite wisdom has yet to implement with GA.
